Restaurants have the right to charge an "acceptable" fee for you to bring in your own wine for dinner (here in California anyway). The fee ranges from $5-$30 depending on the restaurant.
While some people gasp at the thought of the fee, I want to defend the restaurateurs for a moment. When you think of the business world, and realize that restaurants are a business, consider this:
First, did you want to bring in your own steak too? "Waiter! Cook this medium rare…"
Second, a restaurant purchases the wines just as you would at the store.
· They store it, inventory it, and sell it off a wine list that they maintain.
· Serve it in expensive glassware.
· And mark it up less than any other item in the restaurant.
· Did you know that a coke costs about a $.10! You pay $2-3 per soda; why not bring your own?
With all this, I am appalled at two ancient theories of thought from restaurateurs:
1. The "the customer doesn't know about this wine, I can charge extra" attitude.

2. I'm a fine dining or hotel restaurant, I must charge huge markups attitude.
