Q:What is the difference between Champagne and Sparkling wine?
A: All Champagnes are not Sparkling Wines. Not all Sparkling Wines are Champagnes. Confused? Champagne is a place. For a wine to be called Champagne, it must come from the region of Champagne in France. But, not all wines from this region are sparkling. In fact, the wines from this region have only been sparkling for 200 years. Today only a few wines made in Champagne are "still" wines. The less than consistent weather makes "still" wine production difficult and the cost of the highly decorated Champagne fruit makes the "still" wines expensive. Since Burgundy makes such great "still" wine, why would Champagne bother to make a "still"? To read more, see my article on Champagne.
