As a dining society, we have no idea! First of all, when does the waiter ask you for the drink order? We order our wine before we even look at the menu; isn't wine supposed to compliment food? Traditional dining calls for an aperitif while you browse the menu. Upon placing your food order, you direct the wine service.
Here is my modern day dining suggestion. First, if you are alone or with a date, the two of you probably will not want a whole bottle of wine, or would as least like to taste a couple different wines. So, either research the ˝ bottle selections available, or start with a glass of white and order a ˝ bottle of red too. The key is, to get both wines on the table. Large parties, please consider ordering both the red and white wine at the same time. Then, make sure that you pour a glass of each; this will allow the wine to open. Ask the server to pour only a little bit, and then tell the servers "I would like to pour my own wine." Why? Because the server will keep filling your glass, not allowing you to swirl the wine… not allowing you to enjoy the wine because the server wants to sell you a second bottle of wine.
